You make a good point, Laurel Ann; we don't really get to see that love develop on Edmund's side. We hear about it rather than truly see it. But I think Jane Austen loved Fanny too much to give her a man on the rebound--in any case, I hope so for Fanny's sake.

Do you think Edmund should have married Mary, and that Fanny should have married Henry Crawford? I love the what if's about this book: What if Edmund had married Mary; would she have settled into the life of a clergyman's life and learned to value more than money? Would Henry have been redeemed by Fanny's love, or how long would it take for him to stray? This is the only Austen novel that could have ended differently, and I find that fascinating to contemplate.

Laurel Ann

Hi Laurie, I just love the way you make Mansfield Park a friendler place than some people think it is. I agree with many of your points, but after reading the last few chapters, I always felt like Edmund accepted Fanny on the rebound from Mary Crawford. His transition to Fanny didn't seem compelling enough to me. I have never been convinced that Edmund loved her. She was just Fanny, and available!
