Hi, Chrisd--yes, they made some very unfortunate cuts in the new version, which was not as satisfying as the Ciaran Hinds one. I do agree that the actors did what they could with what little they had to work with, including a ninety-three minute running time (shorter in the US, it seems!) and a VERY low budget--at least it sure looked low budget. Which I think is one of the reasons for those unfortunate cuts and rushing of story. Another is not having a Janeite on set at all times!

I watched the new version and I was terribly disappointed.

I saw the Ciaran Hinds version and fell in love with the story. And read the book promptly.

The newest version is re-written and too abridged, in my opinion. The actors did the best they could do with what they had to work with.
